Mission Statement:
The mission of the City of Sault Ste. Marie is to provide a sustainable small urban environment in an international setting for the well-being of its citizens by planning for and managing its physical development in an environmentally friendly manner, by fostering an economy to support its public and private infrastructure, and by nurturing historical, cultural, and recreational activities that enhance the quality of life within it.
General Purpose:
Under the direction of the Deputy City Manager, manages and maintains the City of Sault Ste. Marie computer hardware and software systems, the local area network, the Internet, website, and e-mail in use with the City departments. In addition, the position manages and maintains the City’s VoIP system, City Hall HVAC system, security camera systems, and electronic door locks. This position is also the LASO Officer for the Police Department and will maintain all MDT’s and Police cellphones.
Must have knowledge of NAS boxes and Acronis backup systems. Maintains the Live Stream and Charter Feed of all City Commission meetings. Position must have knowledge of Sophos Firewall and VPN’s. Must have extensive knowledge of Office 365 at an administrator position.
Essential Job Duties:
Knowledge of various computer programs, Microsoft Operating Systems, including Windows 10 and 11 experience. Administrative knowledge of Virtual Servers, MS Server 2012 R2, MS SQL Server 2012 R2, and MS SQL Express. Experience with Microsoft Server along with experience of WAN, LAN, Ubiquiti Switches, Meraki Access Points and Cisco Routers.
Create and maintain the IT Budget
Maintain ATT and Charter Connections/bills
Maintain an accurate inventory of all equipment
The ability to analytically process information and flow with relation to organizational activities and information system’s design
Excellent communication skills to assist, instruct, and explain system operations
Ability to recognize and respond to specific hardware and software needs for all City departments
Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a stressful environment in order to maintain the various information systems with minimal down time for any of the systems
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, the Deputy City Manager, City Manager, City Commission, and general public
Ability to perform multiple projects at one time and be accountable for continued progress with work
Must be able to meet rigid deadlines and perform quality work in an efficient and meaningful manner
Must be able to work cooperatively with City staff, vendors, and the general public
Establish, enforce and adhere to Departmental budget
n conjunction with City Manager, Deputy City Manager, department heads, and employees, develop and recommend goals and objectives for the City’s information system
Analyzes, enhances, and maintains applications in the City’s information technology system to satisfy the needs of the City’s staff
Identifies system problems and initiates resolutions in coordination with internal users and/or external contacts
Organizes workflow to ensure all functions are completed according to priority
Provides in-service training and other forms of education to City’s software users
Maintains and manages the City’s other communication systems, including telephones, cell phones, and other similar systems
Complies with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations, analyzes and resolves fundamental user problems associated with the MS Server
Troubleshoots and provides maintenance of computer equipment and peripherals
Maintains scheduled back-up procedures on all systems
Acquires software and hardware in accordance with the City’s purchasing requirements for all City departments
Maintains maintenance schedules for all information systems hardware
Manage and maintain various software licenses and agreements for City information systems
Complete technology training each year
Supervision Received:
Work is primarily self-directed and is performed under the general direction of the Deputy City Manager. The position will work closely with City staff assisting with hardware and software installation, use and issues.
Supervision Exercised:
Direct supervision of Information Systems Technician(s) as well as any support staff that may work or volunteer for the IT Department
Administrative Duties:
Maintain records, including documentation of expenditures / purchases
Prepare any required monthly and/or annual reports
Develops written technology policies and procedures
Peripheral Duties:
Attend various meetings / committees
Various office and administrative tasks
Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Physical Requirements:
Frequent standing, walking and sitting
Frequent bending, twisting, squatting and reaching
Clear oral and written communication
Ability to operate a variety of automated office machines
Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment
Ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
Physical ability to safely move about and conduct work in various indoor and outdoor
Ability to withstand varied weather conditions, temperature changes, traffic hazards, and varying noise levels
Education/ Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in businesses/computer networking or related field as well as certification for MS SQL and MS Server 2016 is preferred.
A minimum of 3 years of experience in the information technology field.
